China Shale News Review – November. 8 , 2025
◊ CNPC Achieves Breakthrough in Nano Smart Oil Displacement
On October 14, Sinopec Chairman and Party Secretary Hou Qijun presided over the company’s Q3 economic analysis meeting, reviewing operations and setting priorities for the final quarter. Hou urged thorough implementation of President Xi Jinping’s key instructions, emphasizing safety, stability, and efficiency as the year-end approaches. He called for stronger cost control, loss management, and risk prevention, while advancing safety, environmental protection, and innovation. Hou also stressed the need to align the upcoming “15th Five-Year Plan” and 2026 action plans with national strategies to ensure a solid start to the new development phase.
◊ Sichuan Launches Shale Gas Test at Chuanzhao-1 Well
The Chuanzhao-1 formation gas-bearing test project, led by the Chengdu Geological Survey Center of the China Geological Survey, has officially begun in Zhaojue County, Sichuan Province. Following significant shale and tight gas discoveries in the Baiguowan Formation and a successful ignition test, the current phase focuses on production testing of the first section of tight sandstone reservoirs. The project aims to achieve industrial gas flow breakthroughs in new zones, provide geological data for oil and gas exploration in the Xichang Basin, and support the construction of the Southwest China oil and gas resource base. Its outcomes are expected to drive new exploration efforts, strengthen local economies, and promote rural revitalization.
◊ Tarim Oilfield Sets New Record
As of October 23, Tarim Oilfield’s Bozi 1904 well was successfully completed, reaching a depth of 8,226 meters. Using domestically developed 175 MPa ultra-high-pressure equipment, the team achieved a record-breaking fracturing pressure of 154.68 MPa—the highest in China’s onshore operations. This milestone marks a major breakthrough in ultra-deep, ultra-high-pressure reservoir development. The “acidizing + proppant fracturing” technique verified the reliability of Chinese-made equipment under extreme conditions and formed a replicable model for deep reservoir exploitation. The achievement strengthens Tarim Oilfield’s role as a key gas supplier for the West–East Gas Pipeline, contributing to national energy security and technological advancement.
◊ CNOOC Wins OTC Brazil Award
On November 3, CNOOC announced that its independently developed “Haiheng” FLAT PRO wide-temperature-range rheology-stable synthetic-based drilling fluid system won the 2025 OTC Brazil New Technology Award. The system maintains stable flow performance between -10°C and 180°C under extreme conditions, enabling safe and efficient operations in ultra-deepwater, ultra-deep, and cold environments. Regarded as the “Oscars” of offshore energy technology, the award marks CNOOC’s third consecutive OTC win, showcasing China’s progress from follower to peer in deepwater drilling technology. The “Haiheng” series, already applied globally at depths over 2,600 meters, strengthens China’s innovation in deep-sea oil and gas exploration.
