China Shale News Review – August 22 , 2024

◊ Major innovation in shale gas development technology in Jilin Oilfield

On August 1st, researchers from Jilin Oilfield Oil and Gas Technology Research Institute tracked the occurrence of corroded oil pipes on site in the southern Sichuan configuration area. In response to the complex corrosion environment of shale gas wellbores in southern Sichuan, researchers have developed a dual control anti-corrosion plan for shale gas continuous injection of sterilization and corrosion inhibitors.

◊ Breakthrough in China’s onshore ultra deep well drilling technology

On August 7th, it was learned from China National Petroleum Corporation that a super deep drilling rig located on the edge of the Taklamakan Desert had completed its drilling mission. During the process, it drilled as fast as 2006 meters underground in one day, setting a daily footage record for ultra deep drilling on land in China and marking a new breakthrough in the technology of speeding up ultra deep drilling in China.

◊ Official encouragement for shale development

The State owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council has issued a requirement to fully implement the new round of breakthrough strategic actions for mineral exploration, vigorously enhance domestic oil and gas exploration and development efforts, and accelerate the development of unconventional oil and gas businesses such as shale oil and gas, deep coal rock gas (or deep coalbed methane).

◊ The world’s first ultra deep and ultra shallow gas field development

On August 7th, CNOOC announced that the newly discovered Lingshui 36-1 gas field in the southeastern waters of Hainan Island has successfully passed the review and filing of relevant national departments. The proven geological reserves of natural gas exceed 100 billion cubic meters, making it the world’s first ultra deep water and ultra shallow large-scale gas field, achieving innovation in the theoretical field of marine oil and gas exploration and filling the global technological gap.

◊ Innovation of downhole equipment in Dagang Oilfield

Recently, during the development of its subsidiary Zhaodong Oilfield in Bohai Bay, Dagang Oilfield broke the record for the longest tail pipe and cementing operation in domestic lateral drilling with a length of 2645 meters, successfully completing the tail pipe and cementing operations. Zhaodong Oilfield is located in the extremely shallow sea area of Bohai Bay. Due to the characteristics of offshore development, the number of wellheads in the oilfield is limited.
